Cape Cod is a peninsula that forms the easternmost portion of the state of Massachusetts. Reachable by one of three bridges (one is just for railroads) or by boat or small planes, the Cape has a permanent population of about 230,000 and experiences heavy tourism traffic during the summer months to take advantage of its numerous beaches, quaint towns and excellent summer weather.

Cape Cod was among the first places settled by Europeans in North America and was visited by Henry Hudson and Giovanni da Verrazzano and also noted by John Smith in his diaries before the Pilgrims landed there in 1620. Henry David Thoreau once called it the most uninviting landscape on earth but try telling that to the hundreds of thousands of annual visitors over the summer who take advantage of its beaches, numerous bed and breakfastes, shopping, ocean life, golf courses or summer baseball league.
